The Tanzanian shilling (TZS) is the national currency; US dollars are widely used for safaris and hotels, and euros, British pounds and Kenyan shillings are also exchanged. Dar es Salaam has the most offers, followed by Arusha, Zanzibar City, Mwanza and Dodoma.
Licensed bureaux de change operate in city centres and at the airports, and US dollar notes issued before 2009 are often refused. In Tanzania, listings let you exchange US dollars for Tanzanian shillings directly with another person, in cash or by transfer.
